Sunday morning. Sitting in the cockpit drinking coffee. Still windy
We have ventured onto the island a few times now. It’s an interesting place! On the one hand there is construction going on and pretty, colorful homes being built. On the other hand it is an island filled with ruins.
In the late 60’s $38 million was invested into making this an island paradise for the rich and famous. A club house was built and a golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus. This place was built by the Rat Pack and was intended to also be a casino. However, we have been told that they applied for Casino licensing but since there weren’t many hotel accommodations they lost the application to Freeport? By the 70’s the resort had been abandoned and today sits in ruins. It does, however, seem to be a local “Party spot” as there are some recently built plywood standup height tables, picnic benches, modern trash receptacles and a porta potty. Still kind of creepy, literally, because there were still some Halloween decorations. By the way, if you want to golf, the local HOA still maintains 9 holes. Still windy out so we went to explore.
After exploring we continued our walk to the Beach Club for lunch. It’s a little Restaurant and Bar over looking Providence Channel. A grilled chicken salad, burger & chips and appetizer of wings $50! The view and company priceless!
On this adventure we were on foot. We were picked up by locals in both directions. They are incredibly friendly and kind so they must not hate Americans for some odd reason. Maybe those overly polite Canadians serve as a buffer for us. On the way to the Beach Club Hector stopped for us in his pick up truck. Eddie, Mike and Jacqui jumped in the bed of the truck. I wasn’t feeling much like jumping and got in the cab with Hector. Hector is a native of Great Harbor and is on vacation this week from his job as the fuel dock manager. I told him how much we love his beautiful island and then I asked him how do you afford to feed your families? He laughed and said yes, everything on the island is very expensive. He told me most people go to Nassau and buy food wholesale. Then they ship it back to the Island on the mail boat.

On the way back to the marina Tom Williamson picked us up in his cute little Daihatsu minivan. Tom lived in Miami for 50 years and spent summers boating around the Bahamas. He was wearing a cap with an airplane tail number and when asked he explained that he has a condo across from the marina and flies his own small plane here. He was a wealth of info on his favored little Cays in the area for anchoring.
