Pulled up anchor at 0700 at Cedar creek, MM 187. Because we would not have that long of a cruise before our next anchorage we decided to take a little tourist detour to Oriental, NC the sailing capital of North Carolina, also cause it has a free dock. Only took about an hour to arrive and I was looking forward to working on my docking skills. I know I have a ways to go as this boat is a challenge due to its size, low horse power motors and slow response to steering and power input. Most boats of this type have bow thrusters which allows pilot to move the bow left and right independent of the motors.
We walked around Oriental for 30 minutes before we found out the breakfast restaurant was closed for the week. We then thought about visiting the marine supply but it was also closed. It was decided that the town of oriental was closed so we got back on the boat within 30 minutes of arriving and cast off for our next destination. Arrived Dowry Creek Marina near Bellhaven , NC and took on 300 gallons of Diesel at $1.98, getting hard to find under $2.00, and an attempted pump out. Fortunately we later learned it was their equipment not working properly

Our trip to Dowry Creek was 50 miles of big, open waters on the Neuse River and it was a break to not need to pay such close attention to staying in a very narrow channel. Could go to pee or get a cup of coffee and just poke my head out to make sure nothing had mysteriously appeared out of nowhere. For about half the trip we were in choppy, closely spaced 1-2' waves. Felt right at home Chesapeake Bay often just like that. Made a 90 degree turn which left us with better conditions and a more comfortable ride. We arrived at our anchorage in the Pungo River MM 127 for another great boat dinner, Curry chicken in a coconut milk, veggie broth sauce with peppers, onion, zucchini, broccoli, ginger. Had dinner in soccer chairs on the bow to view moon and sunset. Beautiful night, ran generator long enough to cool down boat and do a load of laundry before shutting down everything for another quiet, peaceful night
