Friday 9/16/16
Today is an off day due to wave conditions in the Chesapeake Bay. Calling for 3-4' waves from the East which would put them on our Starboard beam (middle of right side in case you haven't been studying your boating terminology) meaning lots of rolling that the boat could handle but crew would be beyond miserable.
Slept in til 0730, had coffee, which was brewing when I got up every morning and if you recall I had been banished from coffee duty early on in the trip, and did some fluid checks in the engine room. Reviewed the weather and Capt says we stay put. It was actually nice to get a day off to relax. We took a mile or so walk to Full Throttle marine consignment store, lots of cool used boating supplies. Spent $14 on a gallon of 40 weight oil, a bargain, a cool bungee and some velcro straps which we left there til after we walked to Vancostas Restaurand down the road. I tried one of the house specialties, the Western breakfast casserole, think Western omelette with potatoes baked in a dish. Strolled back to consignment store, I picked up my treasures and walked to a noon meeting while Capt Ron had his sights set on a local hardware store that was still run by a great-great grandson 120 years later. He reported that his adventure included a ride back to the marina by the proprietor. I was offered rides but since it was .7 miles I chose to transport my gallon of oil by foot. Our exciting afternoon activity was learning how to launch and retrieve dinghy, great fun.
A relaxing afternoon, Capt Ron planning the upcoming plotting and plundering for following day. Can I get an Arrr...Made Boboli pizzas and were entertained by 2 young guys, late 30s, next to us in a nice 37' Tartan sailboat who were there to get drunk and dinghy back and forth to the yacht club just down the river. They informed us that one of their wives was competing in a Sunfish race next day and he and his buddy were on Rescue Boat duty in their dinghy.
Still calling for 1-2' waves with possibly some 3 footers from the northeast especially while passing area where Atlantic Ocean meets the Bay but should begin to settle down once we start getting protection of the Eastern Shore of the Bay. A little anxious but thinking it will all be good experience to find out how both me and Seaquel handle the conditions.
