Spanish Wells

Monday, January 20, 2020 Today’s cruise was spectacular. The winds were calm and the water was also pretty calm, we had a little roll but long intervals between the waves. Out in the ocean, sun blazing and no one around. That is until we heard Mayday, Mayday, This is the vessel Tranquility Base does anyone copy? They described getting bad fuel and being a drift with no engines. Eddie was able to figure out that they were about 8 ish miles back in the other direction. The only one who responded to them was a sailboat that was 20 miles away, which would have meant 4 hours for the sail boat to get them. We tried to communicate by radio but kept losing contact. Eventually, we turned around. Eddie said, “I’m not leaving them, what if it was us?” Just as we turned around another boat reached them on the radio and was 13 miles away, travels faster than we do and was headed toward them. We continued on to our anchorage. Later at our anchorage In Spanish Wells we saw them get towed in.  ...

Postcard Living

Today is Thursday, January 16, 2020. I have to remember to look at the date. I can’t believe it’s already been 15+ days of 2020. We left Great Harbour and headed to Soldier’s Cay. It’s official, we are living in the pics of the brochures and on postcards. It’s breathtaking! Our cruise took us past Great Stirrup and Little Stirrup Cay and around to the east side of the island. Those are the islands the cruise ships lease from the Bahamas.  Sea Monsters!  Royal Caribbean cruise ships, Majesty of the Seas and Navigator of the Seas It was flat and beautiful cruising until we turned Southeast. Then the rolling started. Our whole cruise was 4 hours which feels like a break after long cruises. I knew we could get through a couple of hours of rolling. And boy was it worth it. This is the view that welcomed us at Soldier’s Cay.   Eddie was tired but I was going in. The water temperature is still pretty cold - 77ยบ. That didn’t stop me I dragged o...

Great Harbor Anchorage

Image
I received a great deal of feedback that it is hard to get a sense of where we are so I took a few pics of the anchorage in Great Harbor. I hope it lends some perspective. This pic is of our anchorage, taken from the flybridge. Over where the buildings are is the marina. The buildings are condos.  One more, taken from the flybridge facing port. Yinsanity is Jacqui and Mike’s home and in the background is a beautiful yacht, Taima, leaving the marina, headed to the cut.  We got out on the kayak. Here’s another perspective of the anchorage. And below are a few pics from our kayak tour of the cove.  On Tuesday we picked up Jacqui in the dinghy and headed to town. Tuesdays are the day the mail boat comes in so we were looking for fresh vegetables. Only not this Tuesday! Some kind of problem with the boat and it was coming on Thursday. We were picked up by a lovely island woman and her adorable 4 year old grandson. When she heard we were headed to the...

1/12/2020 Sunday morning. Sitting in the cockpit drinking coffee. Still windy  We have ventured onto the island a few times now. It’s an interesting place! On the one hand there is construction going on and pretty, colorful homes being built. On the other hand it is an island filled with ruins.  In the late 60’s $38 million was invested into making this an island paradise for the rich and famous. A club house was built and a golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus. This place was built by the Rat Pack and was intended to also be a casino. However, we have been told that  they applied for Casino licensing but since there weren’t many hotel accommodations they lost the application to Freeport? By the 70’s the resort had been abandoned and today sits in ruins. It does, however, seem to be a local “Party spot” as there are some recently built plywood standup height tables, picnic benches, modern trash receptacles and a porta potty. Still kind of creepy, literally, because ...
