Sophie's Island
Buck Island South to Sophie Island Creek
Beautiful boat that waked the heck out of us. The dustbuster came crashing into the galley from the pilot house, opened up and dumped all over the stove and my breakfast. Had to start over. I still like the view!
Our original plan was to cross the Albermarle Sound and take it easy in the afternoon at our anchorage. The sound is short, only about 15 miles but can be really uncomfortable to cross due to the shallow water. That wasn't the case for us. We had a calm and peaceful passage down the Alligator River and across the Pungo Canal.
The canal is a super narrow cut, built in the 1950's for agricultural runoff. It connects the Alligator River to the Pungo River. We turtled along at a slow pace, enjoying the serenity of that ditch. Totally chill except for the mayflies which were still traveling with us on our boat.
Instead of our original plan we decided to cruise a little further and then anchored at Sophie's Island Creek.

When we anchored we spent a good 1 3/4 hours cleaning up bugs and washing down the green spots they leave behind. At one point as we were sweeping them off the cockpit a flock of swallows was flying all around gobbling up the bugs. Very helpful. I wish I had thought to get a picture but we were so deep in the cleaning part that it never crossed my mind.
By the way, while called mayflies, they aren't actually flies, though the definitely do fly. They are aquatic insects and while they typically emerge in May, they can come later in the year depending on the weather. One good thing about them is that they are a sign of a healthy water ecosystem. Another Bug Heaven to add to our memory bank!
On Sunday we stayed at anchor. It rained on and off and the winds were up so we didn't feel like traveling. Our boat can handle it but it wouldn't be comfortable and we are not in a hurry. Surfed the web, read my book, got out on our kayaks and my captain got the port tachometer working. Life is good!

Exploring the marshes on the kayaks with Deb and Keith was great. It felt good to be paddling. I can't remember the last time we kayaked and we both love it.
I loved hearing the wind go through the marshes and seeing the colors of the grass change as the sun went in and out. I didn't bring my phone so no pics.

It was so dark at this anchorage and there were so many stars. We could see the Milky Way. I am always reminded of my brother, Pete, when I see Orion’s Belt and that one Christmas vacation in Longboat Key where he was constantly saying, no matter which 3 stars we saw, “Hey look, there’s Orion’s Belt.” I’m certain he’s up there with those stars.
